Leo's Twitter Updates for 2007-12-07

  • Bad news comes in threes? Unhappy sponsors. Underpaid taxes. And the IRS doesn't believe the TechTV embezzling story. Hey, it's just money. #
  • @globalhermit - I'm hoping you meant two. You did mean two right? #
  • 9a flight SFO->JFK means up by 5a and out the door by 6a. Night night! #
  • Headed to the airport. I always carry Canadian dollars with me in case I need hard currency. #
  • Landing at JFK. This plane has a wi-fi access point named "SecretVA1" - nothing on it though. #
  • There's a fake bug painted in the urinal to encourage men to "aim." It works. #

So sorry about the sponsor problem. I couldn't believe what I was listening to on TWiT - that ridiculous diatribe was completely out of line.

Re: urinal
I've seen those at my school. It makes me laugh so hard. I can imagine someone inventing it so that teachers can tell little boys to "Pee on the bee."

Re: Doctorow vs. Audible
Voicing opinion is one thing, but guy wouldn't let it go gracefully. Not very polite behavior for a guest.

I LOVE what you said on MBW about it. I wish you had included that part of the discussion on Twit. Include Cory saying, "Oh, you can edit that out." And you say, "No, I won't censor content for advertising. Jerk." Do you have that recorded? I think it shows your nobility in leaving it in.

RE: Sponsors - I'm really sorry about Audible cutting up stiff, Leo. OTOH, Cory Doctorow and any sponsor who uses DRM...? Not a good mix.

I have to say I'm surprised they're upset - this isn't the first time one of your in-show ads on TWiT has gotten hijacked by your guests (didn't Dvorak make an art out of it while Dell was your sponsor?). I'd think Audible would be, if not precisely "happy", certainly aware that this makes you a more trustworthy spokesperson for their brand rather than a happyfaced automaton - and that threatening to cut their advertising after Doctorow is publicly critical of them makes them look spiteful and petty.

sorry about your three problems and to cheer you up, i won't make that ridiculous trigonometry joke again, http://leoville.com/blog/2007/12/01/1188/#comment-28677

it's hard to bite the hand that feeds you, but sometimes it's worth it (if that hand belongs to someone who deserves it). i kind of hate drm (it bit me a few times in the past), so i agree with cory doctorow about not being allowed to put his book drm-free on audible.

If it makes you feel any better, all of your listeners respect you a lot for leaving the audible rant in. It really shows integrity.

I respect Cory for his opinion on DRM. I also respect you for your choice to leave his comments in the podcast. I'm sorry it has caused you problems, but DRM is not a good thing and should be fought at every opportunity. Audible has a good service, but it would be much better without the DRM.

DRM is a crime against usability. It harrasses no one but legit users.

Audible should stuff DRM where the sun don't shine. Where's that? Why, that's the analog hole, of course.

LOL
